CURRENCY/BANKS/POST OFFICES

As all the other 11 countries who joined the European Monetary Union, France has adopted Euro as official currency by 1st January 2002. The currency is divided into coins of 1/2/5/10/20/50 cents, 1 and 2 Euro, and banknotes, which are divided into 5/10/20/50/100/200/500 Euro. There are no limits on importation and exportation of currency. The most common credit cards (Master Card, Visa, American Express, Diners) are accepted in the majority of hotels, restaurants and shops. It is possible to withdraw cash from any of the ATM machines outside banks and exchange offices. As for Traveller’s Chèque, there are few shops and basically no restaurants that accept them, so it is recommendable to cash them before use.

The opening time of banks vary from area to area, and can be of two kinds: Monday to Friday 9.00 am-16.30 pm or Tuesday to Friday 9.00 am-13.00 pm and 15.00-16.00 pm, Saturday 9.00-12.00 am.

Post offices follow different operative times: Monday to Friday 8.00am-19 pm and Saturday 9.00-12.00 am.  The central post office in Paris (Rue du Louvre, 42) is open 24h. Public boxes are spread everywhere, and are in yellow color.

Stamps can be purchased in newsagents, in tourist shops, at post offices and in the numerous automated distributors located outside of them. The average price to send letters and postcards in UE countries is 0,46 Euro.
